Work Experience (Gatsby Benchmarks 3, 5, 6)

At Granville Academy, we provide our Year 10 students with the opportunity to carry out a week's work experience in the summer term. In the summer of 2024, our students undertook a number of varied placements, with a selection of the employers listed below:

National Grid
British Telecom
Tesco
Ashby Leisure Centre
Primary School Assistant at several primary schools

For the 2024/25 academic year, we launched Work Experience on the 7th October, allowing students plenty of time to secure a placement. The dates for the Year 10 work experience week are from Monday 30th June 2025, to Friday 4th July 2025.

As a school, we place a high value on the career development of our students, and view their Year 10 work experience as a vital step in their journey from education to becoming young adults. It offers them the chance to explore a career they are interested in, as well as to discover  other fields they may know little about. Some students make such a great impression that employers have offered part time jobs or even future apprenticeships for when they leave school.

Here are some quotes from our students who participated in work experience in July 2024, demonstrating the impact it had on them:

I did something different everyday and the children were lovely as well as the teachers being really friendly and helpful

I have been asked to come back to volunteer in the summer, which will eventually help me to reach my end goal of becoming a vet”

I really enjoyed work experience, the people there were really nice, I feel like it’s done my confidence good and I feel like I have learnt a lot from it

And the employers who hosted them on their placements also provided positive feedback:

The student appeared to become more confident throughout the week and became more independent

He was a real asset to our team. He was nervous the first day but by the end of the week he fitted right in with us all”

How the work experience process works.

1.  Students have been shown how to search for companies and contact names in order to email them, and inquire about the possibility of a placement.

2.  Mr Lambeth has shared employer contacts with all Year 10 students, which they can use if they are struggling to find a placement of their own (all employers accepted students in the summer of 2024).

3.  Once a student has received a definite response from an employer, they can log their placement on Unifrog.org, which is the Trust’s chosen careers information platform. To do this, they need to click on the ‘Placements’ box on their homepage. Here is a short clip demonstrating how they can add a placement to Unifrog: watch video

4.  Once the student has completed the "Student initial form" on Unifrog and clicked submit, the employer receives an email from Unifrog promoting them to complete an "Employer initial form". After the employer submits their form, it is sent via Unifrog to the student's parents or carers, who can provide consent for the placement. Once consent is given, Mr Lambeth, the Work Experience/Careers Lead, will receive an email and, if everything is correctly completed, he will authorise the placement.

Please note that students can only undertake placements with employers who have Employer Liability Insurance that explicitly covers students on  placements in the wording of their policy.

Work experience is a student-led process, but students will receive all the support and encouragement they need to secure a placement. Our aim is for every Year 10 student to be on a placement in the summer of 2025, unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Students may also go on placements at their parents’ workplaces, provided the above insurance requirements are met.
